Foo Dogs, also known as Fu Dogs, are the sacred guardians of the Dharma. Their mighty roar signifies the voice of the Buddha spreading his teachings in all directions.

In China, they are often known as Imperial Guardian Lions and are the protectors of important buildings such as palaces, temples, and tombs. They symbolize valor and strength. Occasionally they are also used on an altar placed toward the front, one on each side.

Foo dog statues appear in mated pairs. The male dog is placed on the right side with his paw resting on a globe, “taking the pulse of the earth”. The female is placed on the left side with her paw protecting her cub. Symbolically, the male foo dog is protecting the building and the female is guarding those inside it.
