This roman gift comes down to us from the founding of Rome, when the gods were thought to be divine manifestations, called "numina" -faceless, formless, but no less powerful. The idea of gods appearing in human form came only later, as the gift of influence from the Etruscans and ancient Greeks. It is interesting that the Roman Gods are said to be at least as old as the founding of Rome.
